Installing the Preferred SSH (Secure SHell) Client Application (SecureCRT)
You must install an SSH client application on your notebook in order to use the Statistics printers (see Printing from a Laptop to Statistics Printers). The campus has a site license for SecureCRT and it is available for download from the DoIT SecureCRT page. Provide your login authentication and agree to the licensing conditions. Click on the Download SecureCRT for Windows link, and save the install file to an appropriate place on your local disk or desktop. DO NOT select the Download SecureFX for Windows. If you are not on your laptop, save or transfer the install file to a USB drive or some other removable media. You can transfer or download the install file directly to a USB drive mounted on a Statistics Unix system, for example, and then move it to your laptop.
Once the SecureCRT install file is on your laptop, double click on it and follow the installation instructions. You should be able to safely accept the other defaults, though you may want to select "Add a desktop shortcut for SecureCRT" for convenience. DO NOT install on a drive other than C: unless you check with SCL staff. Once the installation is completed, you can proceed to the Using SecureCRT section.
Installing an X Windows Manager For Windows 7 (Xming)
* Legacy Information - Installing Xwindows on Legacy Laptops (Cygwin/X for Win2000)
Xming is an open-source, freely available X-Windows application for Windows 7.
Xming Xming packages are located at the Xming Sourceforge site. Download the latest versions of the Xming executable and Xming-fonts packages to your desktop or an appropriate transfer folder.
Is should be safe to select the defaults for installing the Xming executable, though you may want to select desktop and start menu options for Xming (but not XLaunch) for convenience. For the fonts packages, you will get a warning that the installation will go into an existing directory. You can select "OK" for that. Otherwise, it should also be safe to select the defaults, but when the list of available fonts is shown, please select all available fonts.
As mentioned above, the Xming Mesa package is needed if you plan to do OpenGL graphics on your computer but do not have the hardware to directly run OpenGL commands. If you are not sure whether you need it, please Email firstname.lastname@example.org. If you do the install, you will get a warning that the installation will go into an existing directory. You can select "OK" for that.
Once the Xming installation is completed, you can proceed to the Using an X Windows Manager on (Xming) section.
WinSCP allows secure access to remote files systems with an easy-to-use graphical interface. Remote files can be opened in many local applications as if they were mounted on the local machine, and changes can be semi-automatically uploaded back to the remote system when the local application is terminated. It is not as flexible or efficient as full remote file system mounting, such as AFS or NFS, but it is the next best thing. To use files locally, they are actually transferred from the remote to the local system into temp directories, and when work on the files is completed, they are uploaded back to the remote system, so it can be inefficient to use WinSCP with very large files.
You can find the WinSCP download instructions at the WinSCP File Downloads page. Download the installation package from University of Minnesota (umn, Minneapolis, MN). Save the setup file in an appropriate location and start the setup from there. You can safely accept the defaults, or if you are comfortable doing so, you can customize the install to your liking. The remainder of the installation should be painless. Once the installation is completed, you can proceed to the Using WinSCP section.
OpenAFS allows direct access and manipulation of the files in the Statistics computing environment in the same way they are accessed by local Statistics Windows and Unix systems. OpenAFS is efficient and fast, and is easy to use (once connected) compared to an FTP application like WinSCP. Getting connected and authenticated initially can cause problems however, especially if you do not consistently want to establish your AFS authentications and mounts (for example, when you are on a slow connection). OpenAFS is not for everyone.
If you need help with "Installing OpenAFS", please Email email@example.com to get immediate help and to increase priority for adding information on this topic.
