Who I am

I am a mid-career student who has returned to school to study statistics and its applications to social science. Previously, I earned a Ph.D in mathematics from the University of Washington in Seattle. After finishing my mathematics degree in 1994 I taught mathematics at Seattle University and the University of Washington for two years. In 1996 I began working as a consultant on a project to develop a Kalman Filter and this lead to a switch from academia to industry where I worked as an applied mathematician and software developer. My research in mathematics involved using differential geometric properties of singular complex varieties to study their L2 cohomology groups. In 2002 I decided to return to a research environment and began working with the Quantitative Genetic Epidemiology group at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. While working at FHCRC I fell in love with statistics and decided that the best way to pursue a career that combined statistics with research that could benefit public health would be to return to school for a second advanced degree.
