STAT351 Projects Topics

Guidelines: Please submit an abstract (one or two paragraph is enough) of what you intended to do by Oct 24. Please submit a 7-10 page double spaced and typed report (excluding figures and codes) by the last class day with an accompanying diskette that contains codes and data. The project should be based on computer simulation and analysis.

Evaluation:  Organization (5%, Is the paper well organized and readable? Is s/he babbling? Does it include introduction and references? What is the conclusion?) + Statistics (10%,  Is the report statistically correct? Did the student use enough sophisticated statistics? Is he using at least two different nonparametric tests/approaches/methods? Is it better than other methods? Why is s/he using this particular statistic?) + Computer simulation (5%, Did the student do enough computer simulation/computation?, Did s/he produce related statistical graphs?)

Possible Topics: If you have you own topic, please feel free to discuss it with me. Some topics will not be discussed in the class. You are required to do your own research.

  1. Comparison of parametric and nonparametric statistics
  2. Card shuffling and randomness
  3. Stock market trend analysis
  4. Chi squre goodness of fit test
  5. Computer simulation of Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Estimating the threshold by computer simulation alone.
  6. Rank test
  7. Sign test
  8. Permutation test
  9. Order statistics
  10. Entroy as a measure of information
  11. Gaussian kernel smoothing
  12. Spline smoothing
  13. Wavelets
  14. Anything that is related to nonparametric statistics and distribution-free distributions.
Data: Some sample data will be provided (See class web page). If data are not suitable for your topic, you might need to find it somewhere. Internet is the best source for statistical data (best search engine = google).
