Undergraduate Advising and Course Information

The Department of Statistics has a broad undergraduate program to fulfill many needs of students at different levels. It offers several introductory courses designed for non-statistics majors in various disciplines. These courses, Statistics 224, 301, 324, 371, 541, and 571, require no mathematics beyond basic algebra or at most one semester of calculus. They provide an interesting introduction to statistical methods and techniques immediately applicable to a student’s subject area. In addition, the department provides students the opportunity to take more advanced methods courses such as Statistics 333, 349, 351, 411, 421, 424, 426 and 456, in areas like regression analysis, time series analysis, and experimental design, with a strong emphasis on application of the statistical methods. The department also offers three one-year course sequences, Statistics 309-310, 311-312, and 313-314, for students who have completed two or three semesters of calculus. Any of these sequences provides the student with a solid introduction to mathematical statistics and is a good starting point for majoring in statistics. The background from these courses also provides strong preparation for graduate study in statistics or related fields. For more information see the Undergraduate Information Page.

Introductory Statistics Courses: 201, 224, 301, 324, 371

For transfer credit, contact Statistics Department Curriculum and Degree Requirements Committee (see Committees Page or contact the Statistics Ofice at office@stat.wisc.edu or 608-262-2598) If course/section you are interested in is closed, keep trying to register and speak with the instructor before the first day of classes. It is usually possible to informally switch discussion sections within the same lecture. Please note that the instructor does not have authority to override registration limits.

If you are currently enrolled in Stat 201, 224, 324, 301 or 371 and might need some additional help beyond the regular lecture and TA discussion sections, the department offers a free tutoring service. Refer to the Statistics Tutorial Schedule for more details.

Intermediate and Advanced Statistics Courses

For specific questions on course content, it is best to contact the instructor for the course. (email office@stat.wisc.edu or call 262-2598 if you need help finding the instructor.) For general questions, contact an Undergraduate Major Advisor.

Undergraduate Majors in Statistics

If you would like to declare a major in Statistics, or if you want to learn more about our undergraduate majors programs, please contact an Undergraduate Major Advisor. The discipline of statistics invites collaboration with other fields. Therefore, it is often appropriate to consider statistics as a second or additional major. The statistics major has modest course requirements. See the Undergraduate Major in Statistics for more information.

If you have already declared a major in Statistics, please keep the Statistics Undergraduate Advisor up-to-date concerning your academic program and progress.
