Defense systems consistently push the limits of scientific understanding, synergizing new and unique interfaces between software and hardware. Despite the complexity of military systems, statistical methods have not routinely been used to test defense systems. In this talk I will share lessons learned from working towards implementing statistical thinking in the defense testing community. Case studies will illustrate how statisticians must develop innovative approaches to address the complexity of testing issues. They will also showcase the core statistical methodologies that have proven useful in testing defense systems
