Declaring the Major

To declare the statistics major, students should contact the advisor group by e-mail: advising at stat.wisc.edu. It is not necessary to have completed statistics coursework, but prospective majors are strongly recommended to start the major with the Math 221-222-234 calculus sequence and Stat 302 (Accelerated Introduction to Statistical Methods). Major declaration is completed by meeting with an advisor and filling out the Letters & Sciences declaration form.

Modern statistics is an exciting field that has become central to many aspects of daily living. The conceptual core of statistics deals with making decisions in the face of uncertainty. Statistics finds uses in many areas of scientific investigation, ranging from agricultural, medical, and engineering sciences to business, law, government, finance, accounting, and actuarial work.

Research for Undergraduates

A number of faculty members within the Statistics Department are available to provide research opportunities for undergraduate students. It is expected that most of these opportunities will be for students who are working towards Honors in the Major (in Statistics).

The faculty members listed below have directly expressed interest in working with undergraduate students and have provided information about the type of opportunities that could be available. It is possible that other faculty members in the Department might also be available under certain circumstances.

Honors in the Major

To be considered for acceptance into Honors in the Major in Statistics, a student must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 or higher and completed STAT 302, 309 and 333 (or other courses with the approval of the adviser) with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Please see your advisor for formal application.
