The Department of Statistics (Stat) at the University of Wisconsin, in collaboration with the Morgridge Institute for Research (MIR), is seeking to fill a tenure track assistant/associate/full professor position starting by or before August 2012. Candidates should have a PhD in Statistics or closely related quantitative field prior to the start of the appointment. Examples of relevant expertise include, but are not limited to, high-dimensional inference, data integration, graphical modeling, experimental design, network analysis, and statistical genomics. Collaborative opportunities will support genetic and complementary research on virus replication, virus-host interactions, viral pathology, the prevention and control of virus infections, and beneficial uses of viruses as tools in biomedicine, biotechnology and/or nanotechnology. Responsibilities of the position include the training of graduate students and teaching one Stat course per year.

The successful candidate will join a leading statistics department, and will be expected to engage in research, teaching, and graduate student training at the forefront of this discipline. Stat has 20 regular faculty members and more than 100 graduate students. Many faculty members have joint appointments in other departments. The department is well known for its strong interplay between statistical theory, methodology, and practice. It offers a stimulating research environment as well as opportunities for collaborative research in other departments.

Simultaneously, the successful candidate will join an energetic team of investigators in the Virology Challenge Area of MIR, which is furthering understanding and control of viruses and their roles in human disease. The interdisciplinary environment of MIR will provide an exciting context for the methodological, computational, and theoretical advances expected of a tenure track professor of statistics. MIR is part of the twin institutes of the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery, a public-private initiative that facilitates interdisciplinary research and breakthrough discoveries to advance human health and well-being.

Stat has an extensive computing facility, including a LINUX-based network. The facilities support the use of several scientific programming languages and a number of powerful statistical and numerical packages, including R, SAS, Maple, and MATLAB. MIR has a large computing facility with high bandwidth and large data capabilities. Both Stat and MIR collaborate with the Center for High Throughput Computing (CHTC), and have direct access to the Open Science Grid.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison ranks among the top universities in the country in research expenditures. The position provides a competitive startup package and the University and MIR provide excellent support for faculty seeking external funding. Madison is a pleasant medium-sized city (about 250,000 population) located in the lake region of southern Wisconsin. It is the state capital with a large base for educational research and government activities as well as university-industry interaction.
