The Department of Statistics at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, invites applications for multiple tenure-track assistant professor positions starting in August 2019. We seek exceptionally strong candidates with a PhD in Statistics or related quantitative field required and with backgrounds and interests in all areas of Statistics, with preference for those whose research experience is in areas such as data science, machine learning, statistical computing, Bayesian statistics, or statistical modeling. Ability to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels in one or more of these areas or in statistical consulting is preferred. The successful applicants will teach three courses per year, mentor students, conduct research, publish in leading journals, and participate in professional and university service. Other desirable attributes include excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to interact with an interdisciplinary and collaborative intellectual community.
The Department has 21 regular faculty members and more than 180 graduate students. Many faculty members have joint appointments in other departments. The Department is well known for its strong interplay between statistical theory, methodology, and practice. It offers a stimulating research environment as well as opportunities for collaborative research in other departments.
The Department has an extensive computing facility, including a LINUX-based network. The facilities support the use of several scientific programming languages and a number of popular statistical and numerical analysis packages. The department is served by several computer specialists and works closely with computing units in the Department of Computer Science and across campus.
The University of Wisconsin-Madison ranks among the top universities in the country in research expenditures and provides excellent support for faculty seeking external funding. Internal research support is available from funds provided by the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation. Madison is a pleasant medium-sized city (about 250,000 population) located in the lake region of southern Wisconsin. It is the state capital with a large base for educational research and government activities as well as university-industry interaction. The university and community offer outstanding intellectual, cultural and recreational activities.
